The Problem

Students have a general apathy to finances and banking.

Students find the process of setting up their bank account uninspiring and having to read through long emails just to get started is cumbersome and time consuming. The below example from a major bank website shows a gap in their kid-friendly content, instead directing kids to "Fun activities" including using their savings simulator geared to older audiences that kids would not understand.

The Hypothesis

Incentivise kids to take more responsibility for their own finances

How can we improve the onboarding experience for students so that they may feel confident with money matters? Students who engage in money matters early on - talking with family, saving for a goal, interacting with their bank - are more likely to become financially independent and less stressed about money throughout their life.

Solved, Tested & Pivoted

Feedback led me to pivot from an interaction perspective, and although the interactions and ideas resonated with the participants, the instruction were confusing. User testing validated that concepts could be tought during on-boarding, as well as the addition of a social interaction element.

Interactive Prototype

The prototype below shows how the app is tracking Kates financial achievements. There is a total of $350 worth of transactions. She has Stashed (saved) $285 and Splashed (spent) $65 her current savings. The dashboard is showing a notification that she has received a deposit of $200 (eg. birthday present). The next screen prompts Kate to decide how she wants to use the deposit amount (Stash or Splash).

Using savings goals and incentives along the way, Kate is encouraged with reminders and savings milestones, reinforcing a positive savings habit. The use of engaging interactions add a touch of delight, helps Kate gain a sense of achievement and motivation towards her savings goals.

The final screen shows that the overview screen has been updated and she can celebrate her milestones and continue to track her goals.
